Time to Take a (Jack) Stand
Jack stands may very well be the unsung heroes of the lift industry. Their simple, yet rugged design lends them to years of service in your garage. They can be that extra set of hands you need when removing components or even function as a 4-post lift when used with a set of mobile columns. However you choose to use them they can be an intricate and productive part of your shop.
ALI(Automotive Lift Institute) has three distinct classifications for jack stands and it is important to know which ones you need to perform certain jobs. The three types include: Auxiliary, Supplementary and Fixed.
Auxiliary
Auxiliary stands are designed to aid in the balancing and supporting of small to medium components such as mufflers and drain pans. They are not designed to support the weight of a vehicle and should not be used in that capacity.
Supplementary
Supplementary stands are typically used in pairs to equalize a load. They should be used when engaging in operations where the stability of the vehicle may change by adding or removing large components, or when torquing or loosening fasteners. Supplementary stands, typically have higher capacities than auxiliary but still should not be considered for supporting the entire weight of a vehicle.
Fixed
Fixed stands are the heavy hitters and designed to be used in a set of four to support the weight of appropriate vehicles. They can be used in conjunction with many lifts but are normally used with mobile columns than can be easily removed allowing full access under vehicle components.
